Japan proxies

Japan proxies give you Japanese residential, ISP and mobile exits, with city targeting in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. Japanese e-commerce has its own conventions, from mandatory tax-inclusive prices to loyalty points and legacy character encodings, and a collector built for European sites will misread it.

The short answer

  • Total-price display has been mandatory since 1 April 2021: prices shown to consumers must include consumption tax, so the headline yen figure is the tax-inclusive one.
  • METI put Japan's B2C e-commerce market at 26.1 trillion yen in 2024, with an EC penetration rate of 9.8% for goods.
  • Marketplaces award points worth a share of the price; the effective price is price minus points, and you need both fields.
  • Japan is an ARC Mobile country, at country level, which suits checks on what carrier-network phones are served.

What teams collect in Japan

Price monitoring

Electronics and cameras are compared intensely on Kakaku.com and across Amazon.co.jp, Rakuten Ichiba and Yahoo! Shopping. Capture price, points awarded and shipping per seller; electronics price monitoring covers model matching.

Travel fares

Hotel rates in Tokyo and Osaka move with domestic holiday periods as well as inbound demand. Collect from a Japanese point of sale in yen and compare with foreign editions of the same booking sites; see hotel rate shopping.

Reviews & changes

The Japanese App Store and Google Play storefronts carry reviews and rankings separate from other countries'. App store reviews covers per-storefront collection.

Ad verification

With Japanese mobile exits you can check which creatives and landing pages a phone on a Japanese carrier network is shown. Mobile ad verification explains session length and device signals.

SEO & SERP

Japanese queries mix kanji, kana and romaji spellings of the same term, and results differ between them. Track each spelling variant as its own keyword, from Japanese exits with ja-JP headers.

Under 10% of goods sales happen online, so store-level prices, flyers and click-and-collect pages remain part of the picture. Online, the marketplaces dominate the structure: one product appears from many shops, each with its own price, shipping and points.

Tax-inclusive prices, two tax rates and points

Since 1 April 2021 businesses showing prices to consumers in advance must show the total including consumption tax (総額表示). Pages may still show the pre-tax price next to it, labelled 税抜, so parse the label rather than assuming which figure comes first.

The National Tax Agency currently lists a standard rate of 10% and a reduced rate of 8% for food and drink (excluding alcohol and dining out) and subscription newspapers. The NTA has also announced a temporary cut on food for 1 April 2027 to 31 March 2029, so a grocery series will show a tax-driven step in 2027 that is not a pricing decision. Store tax rate per row.

Points are the other trap. Marketplaces and electronics chains award points worth a percentage of the price, and campaigns raise that percentage. Collect price_incl_tax, points, and shipping separately and compute an effective price downstream.

Encoding, script and locale on Japanese sites

APPI and the Personal Information Protection Commission

Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) is overseen by the Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC), an independent body established under the Act. Product, price and listing data fall outside it; reviewer handles and seller contact details on marketplaces may not.

Keep collections to public, logged-out pages, store only the fields you need, and read our acceptable use policy. This summary is not legal advice.

FAQ

Questions

Something not covered? Write to contact@arcproxies.io.

Can I target Osaka or Nagoya instead of Tokyo?

Yes. Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya are the three Japanese metros on the rotating pools. Fukuoka, Sapporo and Kyoto are not city targets; use Japan country targeting for them.

Do you have Japanese mobile proxies?

Yes. Japan is one of four ARC Mobile countries. Mobile is country-level only and sessions hold for 5 to 60 minutes. See mobile proxies.

Why is the Japanese text in my scraped pages garbled?

Usually an encoding mismatch: the page is Shift_JIS or EUC-JP and was decoded as UTF-8. Use the charset from the Content-Type header or the meta tag, then normalise full-width characters with NFKC before parsing numbers.

Should I store the price with or without points?

Store both, plus the points rate. Points campaigns change the effective price without touching the listed price, and a series without them will miss most promotions on Japanese marketplaces.
