Hostel price monitoring: dorm beds and private rooms per night and market

Hostel price monitoring collects what hostels charge per dorm bed and per private room, for each date and each visitor market. The unit is a bed, not a room, which changes how you collect, compare and store every price.

The short answer

  • Hostel prices are per bed per night and vary by dorm size, mixed or female-only, and how many beds you ask for. Store all three.
  • Per-person city taxes weigh more on a bed price than on a room rate: Amsterdam charges 12.5% of the overnight price in 2026, Berlin 7.5% of the net price.
  • Hostelworld sold 7.0 million net bookings in 2025, 63% of bednights through its app. Web collection sees the web price; record that limit.
  • Weekend minimum stays and group-size limits create gaps that are not sell-outs. Classify them before you compute averages.

The problem

What goes wrong without the right IPs

The price depends on how many beds you ask for

A search for one bed may show the cheapest 12-bed dorm; a search for four beds may skip it because only two beds are left. Fix the bed count per series, and run a separate group series if you price group stays.

Dorm types do not line up across sites

"8-bed mixed", "Basic 8 Bed Dorm" and "Bed in 8-bed room, shared bathroom" may be the same bed. Map dorm size, gender policy and bathroom type into your own room taxonomy.

Deposits and pay-at-property splits

Hostel platforms often take a deposit online with the balance paid on arrival, sometimes in local currency. The total is what the guest pays, not the amount charged online.

Extras that are not optional

Linen or towel charges, key deposits and city taxes appear on some pages and not others. Record them per hostel, and decide which are mandatory for your comparison.

Weekend demand makes Friday the expensive night

Hostels in party and city-break markets price Fridays and Saturdays very differently from weekdays, often with two-night minimums. Sample every weekday, not just the next Friday.

What to collect

What you can collect

Hostel and channel
Your hostel ID and where the price came from: own site, a hostel platform, a general OTA.
Bed type
Dorm size, mixed or female-only, ensuite or shared bathroom; or private room with its capacity.
Beds requested
One bed or a group size. Prices and availability differ by the count you ask for.
Price per bed per night
As shown, plus the total for the stay. Never divide a private room's price by its capacity without saying so.
Deposit and balance
Online deposit, balance due at the hostel and the currency of each.
Mandatory extras
City tax, linen, key deposit, breakfast if compulsory, each with its basis.
Availability status
Available, minimum stay not met, not enough beds, sold out, or not retrieved.
Point of sale and timestamp
Exit country and collection time, so you can compare markets and days.

How it runs

How a collection run works

  1. 01

    Define the bed panel

For each hostel, pick the bed types you price against: usually the cheapest large dorm, a small dorm, a female-only dorm and a private double. Freeze the mapping per hostel.

  2. 02

Shop one bed and one group

Run a one-bed series for every date and a smaller group series (four beds) for weekends and holidays. Use one session per hostel and date.

One bed and four beds for the same hostel and night
    import secrets, requestsBASE = "USERNAME_pool-arcfast_country-de".split("_country-")[0]   # USERNAME_pool-arcfastdef proxy(country: str) -> dict:    user = f"{BASE}_country-{country}_session-{secrets.token_hex(4)}_sesstime-5"    url = f"http://{user}:PASSWORD@proxy.arcproxies.io:8000"    return {"http": url, "https": url}def beds(hostel_url: str, date: str, guests: int, country: str) -> str:    with requests.Session() as s:        s.proxies = proxy(country)        r = s.get(hostel_url, params={"date_from": date, "nights": 1, "guests": guests}, timeout=30)        r.raise_for_status()        return r.textfor guests in (1, 4):    html = beds("https://hostel.example/amsterdam-central", "2026-11-13", guests, "gb")    # parse: bed type, price per bed, deposit, balance, extras, status
  3. 03

Normalise to price per bed per night

Convert to one currency, add mandatory extras with their basis, and keep the city tax separate. For private rooms, store the room price and the capacity; derive a per-person figure only in the analysis layer.

  4. 04

    Compare like for like

Compare the cheapest large dorm with the cheapest large dorm, not with whatever is cheapest that night. Report gaps per bed type and per day of week.

Setup

Recommended setup

Hostel pages are light and the panel is large, so bandwidth is modest. Residential exits in the guests' markets show the prices those guests see.

The four-bed group series on weekends adds about a quarter. Most hostel pages carry the bed list in a JSON response; fetching only that is far lighter than rendering the page.

Bandwidth never expires, so a bigger single purchase is only ever cheaper per GB. See the ladder.

In depth

Hostel prices, in depth

Why hostel pricing needs its own data model

A hotel sells rooms; a hostel sells beds and rooms side by side, and the same room may be sold bed by bed on one night and as a private group room on another. Revenue managers at hostel chains therefore price inventory by bed type and day of week, and their competitive data has to use the same unit.

That is the main difference from hotel rate shopping: the matrix is hostel × date × bed type × beds requested × market, and the cheapest offer on a night is often a different product from the cheapest offer the night before.

City taxes and the per-bed price

Accommodation taxes are usually set per person per night or as a percentage of the overnight price, so they weigh heavily on low bed prices. Amsterdam's tourist tax stays at 12.5% of the overnight price in 2026; Berlin's Übernachtungsteuer is 7.5% of the net accommodation price. CMA guidance for UK consumers gives a per-person, per-night local tax as an example of a charge that belongs in the total price.

Keep the tax in its own column and record its basis. A per-bed comparison across cities is only fair after taxes are handled the same way for every row.

Web prices, app prices and what you can observe

Hostelworld Group reported 7.0 million net bookings for 2025, up 1%, with 63% of net bednights sold through its app. App-only offers are outside a web collection. Label your series as web prices, and do not infer app pricing from them.

  • Collect public, logged-out web pages only; member prices behind a sign-in are out of scope.
  • Prefer the hostel's own booking engine for its direct price, and platforms for the price most guests compare.
  • Keep concurrency low; many hostel booking engines run on small shared infrastructure. See handling 429 rate limits.

FAQ

Questions

Something not covered? Write to contact@arcproxies.io.

How do you compare hostel prices with hotel prices?

Compare a private hostel room with a hotel room at the same occupancy, and a dorm bed with the cheapest hotel price per person only with a clear label. A bed in a shared dorm and a hotel room are different products, and mixing them without a label distorts averages.

Why does the dorm price change when I search for more beds?

Because availability is counted per bed. A search for four beds skips dorms with fewer free beds, so the cheapest offer for a group can be dearer than for one person. Track one-bed and group searches as separate series.

Which country should hostel prices be collected from?

From the guests' markets. Many hostel guests book from another country, and prices and currencies can differ by the visitor's country. Run one series per main source market rather than from the hostel's own city.

Are hostel deposits part of the price?

The deposit is a split of the price, not an extra. Store the online deposit and the balance due at the hostel, and use their sum, plus mandatory extras, as the total.

How much bandwidth does hostel price monitoring use?

Little per search. Hostel availability responses are often a hundred kilobytes or so; 800 hostels, 45 dates and a daily run come to roughly 130 GB a month, less if you fetch only the availability data.
