How to use a proxy with FoxyProxy

FoxyProxy is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that stores a proxy's username and password, so the browser no longer prompts. Add the gateway under Options → Proxies → Add with type HTTP, host, port, username and password, then pick it from the toolbar for all traffic or choose Proxy by Patterns to route only matching sites. SOCKS5 with credentials works in Firefox only; Chrome supports no SOCKS authentication.

your proxy, as a URL

The short answer

  • Type HTTP with Username and Password filled in works in both Chrome and Firefox.
  • SOCKS5 username and password: Firefox only. In Chrome, use HTTP mode on the same gateway port.
  • Proxy by Patterns sends only matching URLs through the proxy; everything else connects directly. It appears once at least one include pattern exists.
  • Credentials are stored per hostname and port. On Chrome that means one username per gateway address; Firefox has a workaround for several.

Setup

Set up FoxyProxy with a proxy, step by step

  1. 01

    Install FoxyProxy

Install FoxyProxy Standard from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons. In Chrome, open the extension's details and enable Allow in Incognito if you want it to apply to incognito windows as well.

  2. 02

Add the gateway as a proxy

Open the extension's Options, go to Proxies and click Add. Fill in the fields and click Save. Country and City are display labels for your own reference; the actual targeting is in the username.

    Options → Proxies → Add
    Title: ARC Germany (sticky)Type: HTTPHostname: proxy.arcproxies.ioPort: 8000Username: USERNAME_pool-arcfast_country-de_session-k3f9a1x2_sesstime-10Password: PASSWORD
  3. 03

Test it from the Proxies tab

Each proxy entry has a Test action that loads an IP check server through it. Close other proxied tabs first so the result reflects only this entry, then confirm the IP sits in the country from the username.

  4. 04

Route only some sites with patterns

Open Patterns for the proxy and add include patterns for the sites you want proxied. Wildcard patterns use * and ?; Match patterns need a scheme, host and path. Then choose Proxy by Patterns in the toolbar popup. URLs that match no pattern go direct.

    Patterns (include)
Wildcard *.example.com matches www.example.com, shop.example.comMatch *://*.example.com/* same hosts, written as a match patternWildcard *://example.org/* one host, any path

    SOCKS5 in Firefox

On Firefox, the same entry can use type SOCKS5 with the same username and password; leave Proxy DNS on so hostnames are resolved by the proxy. The gateway serves SOCKS5 and HTTP on the same port with the same credentials.

Options → Proxies → Add (Firefox)
    Type: SOCKS5Hostname: proxy.arcproxies.ioPort: 8000Username: USERNAME_pool-arcfast_country-de_session-k3f9a1x2_sesstime-10Password: PASSWORDProxy DNS: on

FoxyProxy on Chrome vs Firefox

FeatureChromeFirefox
HTTP proxy with username and passwordYesYes
SOCKS5 with username and passwordNoYes
Proxy DNS for SOCKSNot applicableYes (on by default)
Several credentials for one host and portNoYes, with letters after the port (e.g. 8000a)
Proxy per tab or per containerNoYes

The per-port rule matters with a gateway where everything is the same host and port and only the username changes. On Chrome, keep one FoxyProxy entry and edit its username to switch country or session. On Firefox, add a letter after the port in each extra entry, as the FoxyProxy help describes, and FoxyProxy removes it when connecting.

Toolbar modes in FoxyProxy

  • A single proxy: every request uses it; patterns are ignored. Good for a short session where the whole browser should look like it is in one country.
  • Proxy by Patterns: only matching URLs use their proxy. Useful for checking one market's version of a few sites while everything else stays on your own connection.
  • Disable: FoxyProxy steps back and the browser's own proxy setting applies.
  • Tab Proxy and Container Proxy (Firefox only): a proxy for one tab or one container, which makes side-by-side market comparison easy.

Connections to localhost, 127.0.0.1 and ::1 are never proxied by default; the Global Exclude setting lets you add more hosts that should always connect directly.

Sticky sessions in a browser extension

A browser opens many connections per page. With a rotating username they can leave from different exits, so a site sees one visit arriving from several addresses. Use a sticky session username with a hold long enough for the browsing session, and change the _session- handle when you want a new IP. Rotating vs sticky sessions explains the mechanics.

FoxyProxy only changes the network path. Language, time zone and stored cookies still come from your browser profile; testing a proxy's location shows what to check.

The problem

Common pitfalls

SOCKS5 with a password on Chrome

Chrome sends no SOCKS credentials, so a SOCKS5 entry with a username fails there. Switch the entry's type to HTTP; the gateway accepts it on the same port.

Two Chrome entries for one gateway

Two entries with the same host and port but different usernames share one stored credential on Chrome, so one of them does not use the username you expect. Keep one entry per host and port on Chrome.

Proxy by Patterns missing from the popup

The option only appears when at least one include pattern exists. Add a pattern first, then select the mode.

Managed browsers

If an administrator policy or managed storage controls the extension, Save and the popup are disabled. Use an unmanaged browser profile for proxied work.

Questions

Does FoxyProxy store the proxy username and password?

Yes. Enter them in the proxy entry under Options → Proxies, and FoxyProxy answers the proxy's authentication request so the browser does not prompt. If you leave both fields empty, the browser shows its own prompt instead.

Does FoxyProxy support SOCKS5 with authentication in Chrome?

No. SOCKS5 username and password work only in Firefox, because Chrome supports no SOCKS authentication. In Chrome, add the gateway with type HTTP, which covers HTTPS sites as well.

How do I proxy only certain websites with FoxyProxy?

Add include patterns to the proxy entry, for example the wildcard *.example.com or the match pattern *://*.example.com/*, and choose Proxy by Patterns in the toolbar. URLs that match no pattern connect directly.

Can I switch countries quickly in FoxyProxy?

On Firefox, create one entry per country with a letter after the port, so each keeps its own username. On Chrome, credentials are stored per host and port, so edit the username of a single entry to change country.
